KWAZULU-NATAL HOSTS THE PROVINCAIL INDIGENOUS GAMES IN KWADUKUZA
KwaZulu-Natal begins its preparations to defend the Indigenous Games national title with the staging of the provincial games this weekend on 19th 20th August in KwaDukuza north of Durban.
This is the next major event in a series of programmes organized by the KZN Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
The province has dominated the games for the longest of time, having proved impossible to unseat from the top spot for the past 10 years.
The indigenous sport which was relatively unknown before, is now gradually gaining popularity, amongst youth in both urban and rural areas across the country.
The games themselves can be traced back many centuries, passed down from generations in different cultural groups and nations. There are currently nine codes being played at national level, which are khokho, induku, igqathu, amagenda, umlabalaba, driestokkies, dibeke, incuva and juskei. The games are played at high tempo which makes for good excitement for players and spectators alike.
A further motivating factor for Team KZN to be at their utmost best is that the national event will be once again be coming to the province, which will afford them another opportunity to showcase their skill amongst the home spectators. The games were last hosted behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions.
However, for now the focus is on the provincial games in KwaDukuza this weekend.
