Hosts Ethekwini Win The Public Servants Games
Ethekwini Metro has dominated the Work and Play Club Championships held in Durban over the week-end of 18-19 February.
The tournament is solely for clubs of public servants that have topped district leagues.
Though less prominent than the yearly Inter-Departmental Games, the tournament is much more effective as the participants take part in sport on a regular basis at district level, leading to the Provincial finals.
Co-ordinated by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, the progamme has provincial and local government support and employees are allowed time off to train and play throughout the tournament season. All public servants are encouraged to find clubs in their respective areas and join.
The aim is to promote an active, healthier and motivated public service.
The codes that form part of the programme are males’ soccer - open and veterans, ladies’ soccer and volleyball.
Participants include the Metro Police, SAPS and public servants from a variety of Provincial and National departments.
All 11-districts including eThekwini Metro were represent in the games, although not all take part in all the codes.
Ethekwini Metro came top with 24 points, followed by uMgungundlovu with nine points and in joint third place was Ilembe and Amajuba with 5 points each. Zululand came fourth with 4 points.
