MEC applaud thousands of KZN Virtual Run participants

The inaugural KZN Virtual Run was aimed at creating awareness around gender-based violence across the Province as well as promoting active and healthy lifestyles.
The event, which was free to all South Africans, was hosted by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation in collaboration with KZN Athletics and the Comrades Marathon Association on 18 and 19 July as part of Mandela Day festivities.
The core aim of this year’s Run was to highlight the scourge of gender-based violence with a special focus on young males to take a stand and protect women and children against all forms of abuse.
“This race is the best platform for us to highlight the scourge of gender-based violence following the alarming rise in incidents of female murders at the hands of men. Therefore, I was very happy with the turnout as the race attracted nearly 6000 people who shared their messages of support against gender-based violence and abuse of women and children. The race also gave an opportunity for our people to exercise as part of our programme to promote active and healthy lifestyles, which is important in building a strong immune system especially during this health emergency brought by Covid-19,” said MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela.
Entrants had an option of a two, five and 10 kilometres runs and could participate together with their friends and families, with some of them carrying placards sending strong messages condemning gender-based violence.
MEC Mavimbela urged people to observe the National Lockdown regulations when exercising, walking, running or jogging in order to prevent the spread of the Corona virus.
