The winning team was announced at the Games’ closing ceremony on Friday, 25/10/19, by Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu. The National Games for senior citizens are organized jointly by the Departments of Social Development and Sports, Arts and Culture in collaboration with nine Provincial Governments. They are part of government’s effort to encourage active and healthy lifestyles among the elderly as well as give them a platform to socialize and discuss challenges they face.

MEC Mavimbela was in PE to give her full support to the senior citizens as they dominated the different codes of sport. She was highly impressed by the level of competitiveness, dedication and commitment demonstrated by the elderly in the different competitions they participated in.

“We would like to congratulate Team KZN on winning the 2019 National Golden Games. The team has really done us proud. Watching the games I could see the determination in our team and I was confident that we were going to win. One would never say you were watching senior citizens especially the 100 meters race.”

“Participating in Golden Games is important for our elders as it keeps them fit. Our aim as the Department is to ensure that our senior citizens are healthy and fit at all times to prevent them from getting sick and relying on medication. Their performance at these games has proven to us that active bodies create active minds,” said MEC Mavimbela.

Team KZN won gold with a total of 499 points, followed by Gauteng on second spot with 480 points and Limpopo came third with 446 points.

A healthy, winning, and socially cohesive province through sport and recreation.
