The KZN MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi has extended her condolences to family of former Bafana Bafana striker, Philemon “Chippa” Masinga who died on Sunday morning, 13/01/19.

“We are saddened by the news of the passing on of our legend Phil Masinga. We have fond memories of Masinga as one of the country’s top strikers of all times. He represented South Africa with pride at all levels of his illustrious football career, playing as a professional in the country and in the tough football leagues of Europe.

“We mostly remember his contribution towards the success of the golden generation of Bafana Bafana team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996 and qualified for the 1998 World Cup in France. Perhaps his long range strike against Congo that sent Bafana Bafana to their first World Cup remains one of the greatest highlights of his career,” said MEC Sithole-Moloi.

“We hope that the present generation of footballers will learn from his dedication to the game, hard work and discipline, as we strive to restore Bafana Bafana to their rightful place as one of the top national teams in Africa and the World.”

“On behalf of the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, Provincial Government and the people of KwaZulu-Natal, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the football fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” she said.
