KwaDukuza is gearing up to host the Provincial Disability Games at Stanger High School in Ilembe District on Saturday, 10 November 2018.

The Games are part of a comprehensive response to issues raised by disabled people during the KZN Disability Summit which was hosted by the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi in November 2016. The Summit was hosted to discuss and find solutions to challenges faced by people with disability in the arts, culture, sport and recreation sectors.

The conference resolved, among other things, that sports competitions needed to be created in order to give athletes opportunities to showcase their talent. The conference resoled that:

  • Sustainable programmes must commence from a ward level leading to provincial level.
  • The talent identification pathway must be in place to identify and nurture the talent, from developmental, national and international competition including Paralympic and Special Olympics.
  • Each code should be separated to ensure that a competition structure is created to ensure that all codes are promoted.
  • The inaugural Disability Games were held in 2016 with only King Cetshwayo District hosting the visitors Ilembe District in Richards Bay. Last year the number of participating districts increased to six.

“The hosting of the Provincial Disability Games is a response to the resolutions of the Disability Summit that we hosted in 2016, whereby we wanted to listen to the challenges of the sector when it comes to opportunities to participate in sport and recreation as well as arts and culture,” said MEC Sithole-Moloi.

“We are excited that this year all 11 districts are participating in the games. People with disability are an important sector of society and they are capable of participating in different sport codes up to international level. We call upon the people of KwaDukuza and surrounding areas to come and give support to disabled athletes when they compete in different codes next week,” she said.
MEC Sithole-Moloi also noted that the games are hosted during the period when South Africa commemorates National Disability Rights Awareness Month, on 3 November to 3 December.
Games will start at 09h00 on Saturday, 10 November, at Stanger High School Grounds. The opening ceremony will be hosted on Friday, 09 November.
Codes to be played include athletics (100m, 200m, relay, wheelchair race), wheelchair basketball, chess, football, goalball, mlabalaba, netball, table tennis and passing the ball.
The Provincial Disability Games are part of efforts by the Department to promote active lifestyle among citizens with disability by encouraging them to participate in sport and recreation activities.
This event will also be used to raise awareness about health issues facing people with disabilities such as obesity, depression and cardiovascular diseases due to them not doing physical exercises and not having enough support to enable them to participate in competitive sport.

The games will organized as follows:

Date: Saturday, 10 November 2017

Time: 09h00 – 17h00

Venue: Stanger High School Grounds – KwaDukuza.
