MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi has applauded the disability sector for their commitment to doing things for themselves instead of relying on government and others.

Sithole-Moloi was speaking at the conclusion of the KZN Provincial Disability Games at Stanger High School in KwaDukuza, Ilembe District, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Saturday, 10/11/18. The Games involved players with disability from the Province’s 11 districts who competed in different sport codes during the day-long event.

EThekwini Metro became overall winners followed by Amajuba. Umgungundlovu took third spot, iLembe 4th and 5th place went to Zululand.

Teams competed in codes like athletics (100m, 200m, relay, wheelchair race), wheelchair basketball, chess, football, goalball, mlabalaba, netball and table tennis.

MEC Sithole-Moloi said in her interaction with people with disability they have always indicated their willingness to do things for themselves.

“During the Disability Summit that I hosted in 2016 when I started as MEC, people with disability indicated that they wanted to do things for themselves and not only rely on government grants. Participation in sport will not only allow them to remain active and healthy but others can make sport a career and compete at national and international levels,” she said.

“We are happy that this year the Disability Games involved the whole province as last year we only had six districts, and the previous year there were only two districts. My vision is to see these games culminate into a national competition where KZN will select a representative team to compete against other provinces. I am going to lobby the National Minister to ensure that this happens.”

MEC Sithole-Moloi noted that the games were hosted during the period when South Africa commemorates National Disability Rights Awareness Month, on 3 November to 3 December.

The Provincial Disability Games are part of efforts by the Department to promote active lifestyle among citizens with disability by encouraging them to participate in sport and recreation activities.

Vision
