Department takes Water Safety Campaign to schools

The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) continues with its endeavors to ensure water safety and curb drownings with the Water and Safety Campaign being rolled-out to schools in the Province. The Department’s officials visited two schools under Umgungundlovu District, namely Esigodini Primary School in Pietermaritzburg and Mbuthisweni Primary School in Richmond this month (January).

The campaign emphasizes the importance of teaching communities about water safety in order to curb drowning in the province. It takes into account all potential water hazardous areas such as open waters in rivers, dams, in the sea as well as swimming pools.

KwaZulu-Natal Aquatics on behalf of the Department facilitate the programme. For now it targets identified schools where pupils encounter open waters on a day-to-day basis.

Jabulani Mhlongo, a water safety guide who is part of the initiative expressed satisfactory with the water safety campaign during their visit at the school. “DSR is doing a great job in reducing drowning amongst people from the rural areas. The fact that they sent us to the water safety training is proof enough that they have committed to keeping people’s safety a priority”, he said.

The hosting of the schools programme follows on the heels of the successful hosting of the Festive Season Summer Beach Games in conjunction with local municipalities in KwaDukuza and Umzumbe on the province’s south coast.

The beach games are hosted annually throughout the festive season, where the patrons join in various beach games and activities to promote water safety message, especially around dams, rivers, swimming pools and the ocean.

A healthy, winning, and socially cohesive province through sport and recreation.
