The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi has today, 30/04/18, visited the family of the late football coach Bheka Phakathi to offer her condolences. The former Orlando Pirates, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United player passed away following a fatal car accident in Greytown, KZN midlands, on Sunday.  Speaking to the family at their Lamontville home, the MEC said she was still shocked about the untimely death of Umvoti FC coach.

“He had high hopes about taking his football side to the Premier Soccer League in the near future. Phakathi had approached the department for financial support to prepare his team to participate in the National First Division play-off in June,” said Sithole-Moloi. Umvoti FC won the ABC Motsepe League in KwaZulu-Natal for 2017/2018 season and are due to represent the Province in the national play offs in Limpopo on 04-09 June 2018. “We hope that the team will make Bheka proud by emerging victorious in the play offs and play in the National First Division next season.”

Sithole-Moloi also said that throughout his career as a player and later a coach, Phakathi was known for being a disciplined, hard-working and dedicated sportsman who was always humble. “His death has robbed us of a good role model for our youngsters. We pass our condolences to his family and the football fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” she said.
