Department of Social Development are 2018 Work & Play Champs

The Provincial Department of Social Development (DSD) are this year’s winners of the Work and Play Inter-Departmental Games after beating other government departments, including last year’s champions, Department of Health at the games held at Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay, on the north coast, from 18-19 May.
DSD played with great dedication in every code and managed a top three spot in most of the games they participated in.
Again, the organisers, the Department of Sport and Recreation did not have a good showing, as they did not make it to the top three, only coming fourth overall.
After the final verification of results, the DSD came number one with 27 points, which shows massive improvement considering they did not make it to the top three in 2017. Last year’s winners, the Department of Health followed with 23 points, improving from last year’s 17 points, and COGTA (the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) took third place with 16 points, a one-point drop from form last years, 17 points.
In these games, government employees compete in a variety of popular sporting codes, including football for males and females, netball, athletics field event, fun run/walk, volleyball and indigenous games comprising stick fighting, umlabalaba (board game) and tug-of-war.
