Pinetown district takes honours in KZN Primary Schools Athletics Championships

The 2017 KZN Primary Schools Provincial Athletics Championships that took place on 10-11 February 2017, at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban, showcased the depth of talent among school children in the Province. Over 700 children from different Districts around the Province competed in various track and field disciplines including high jump, long jump, discuss, shotput, javelin, hurdles, relay, 100m, 1500m as well as cross country.

The stadium was packed with children, teachers and the parents to give support to the young ones.

The Championships are a joint venture between the Department of Sport and Recreation (KZNDSR) and the Department of Education (DoE) in the Province as part of the School Sport Programme, to encourage learners to play sport and embrace active and healthy lifestyles.

A total of 12 KZN Education Districts, including eThekwini which is divided into two due to the high number of learners, participated in the competition. The children demonstrated high levels of competitiveness throughout the two days of competition.

Athletes from Pinetown District dominated most of the events and it was no surprise when they emerged overall winners. Second place went to Amajuba District and Umlazi District (eThekwini) came third.

Both MECs for Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi and Education, Mthandeni Dlungwana have embraced the school sport programme, citing its benefits in developing healthy minds and bodies as well as its contribution to social cohesion. Active living also contributes to improved academic performance of learners.

According to the event organisers it was not for the first time that Pinetown have come top. The also occupied the same sport last year. After the competition the Provincial primary schools team will be selected to represent the Province in the national games in Potchefstroom, North West Province, next month in March.

A healthy, winning, and socially cohesive province through sport and recreation.
