The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) once again is teaming up with the provincial Department of Social Development, the Office of the Premier, Department of Health and other partners to present the popular Golden Games for senior citizens.

This is a programme for persons 60 years and older, and is part of Government’s Older Persons Programme.

This year’s Games will be hosted at the Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre in Margate under the Ugu District Municipality from 12-13 September.

Participants representing their districts take part in a number of active and fun games ranging from track athletics to jukskei, duck walk, dress up, ball throwing and, for those in wheel chairs, washing pegs “pegging”. There are activities for every level of fitness and ability.

The participants compete in two age groups - sixty to sixty-five, and seventy and older. A number of them are well into their eighties!

While medals and trophies are awarded, the emphasis is on everyone having fun by being active, socialising, and enjoying a bit of traveling.

The Golden Games are in line with the priorities of the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi, who has placed emphases on promoting active lifestyle for citizens of all ages. The MEC, other members of Executive, mayors and councillors are expected to grace the event.

The Provincial Games will feed to the national Golden Games, also to be hosted by KZN next month in October.
