King Cetshwayo District’s dominance in recreational games continued as the region took the top spot in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Golden Games held at Margate this week. (13th September).

The Richardsbay based district were recently also crowned the provincial Indigenous Games champion at Ladysmith in northern KZN.

The sporting competition exclusively for senior citizens is part of Government’s Older Persons Programme.

In the Province the Golden Games are co-ordinated by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation in partnership with provincial Department of Social Development, Office of the Premier and the Department of Health. The respective municipalities also support their district teams in terms of transport, attire and other logistics.

The programme featured a number of active and fun games ranging from track athletics to jukskei, duck walk, dress up, ball throwing and, for those in wheel chairs, washing pegs “pegging”.

Some of the activities in particular athletics are played at a surprisingly high pace despite the advanced age of the participants.
