Congratulations to Team Uthukela District for becoming the overall winners of the annual Work and Play Provincial Club Championships for government servants held in Newcastle, north of the Province, at weekend (02-03 December).

Teams from various Provincial and National Government Departments, including entities and municipalities, competed in soccer, volleyball and netball on Friday and Saturday.

The programme is part of efforts by government to promote active lifestyle among public employees by encouraging them to participate in sport and recreation activities.

This event is hosted with the aim of addressing the health issues faced by public servants such as obesity, depression, heart diseases and cardiovascular diseases due to not doing physical exercises and constantly involving themselves in unhealthy habit such as using alcohol and drugs in an abusive manner.

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi applauded the programme that encourages civil servants to be active.

“Government recognizes that public servants are faced with many work-related stressful situations and many of them do not exercise their bodies, leading to many lifestyle diseases.”

“Through the Work and Play programme we are attempting to inculcate a culture of active lifestyle among government employees across all age groups. Through their participation in sport and recreation they will become a positive influence to work peers as well as their families.”

Vision

A healthy, winning, and socially cohesive province through sport and recreation.
