The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation in KwaZulu-Natal, Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi has congratulated Team KZN School Sports for being crowned overall winners in the 2016 SA School Sport Summer Championships held in Johannesburg on 10-14 December.

The Province’s victory was announced during the Games closing ceremony on Wednesday evening, 14 December.

The win is a significant achievement for the Province since the tournament has over the years been dominated by provinces like Gauteng. Last year KZN came second to Gauteng.

“Schools are the nurseries for our sports development. Success in competitions such as these therefore augurs very well for us in our endeavour to remain a leading province in sport and recreation,” remarked MEC Sithole-Moloi.

MEC Sithole-Moloi added that this has not been an easy journey and commended the Provincial Department of Sport and Recreation (KZNDSR) for their role in supporting the School Sport Programme, in partnership with the Provincial Department of Education (DOE).

She said KZNDSR was in the process of revising the memorandum of understanding with DOE in order to streamline and set clearly defined roles and responsibilities to ensure a smooth delivery of the school sport programme.

Speaking at the closing ceremony last night, Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, thanked the players for sacrificing their holidays to be part of this tournament, adding that every player who participated in this tournament was a winner. “This is a great stepping stone for the young players to be champions,” he said. He congratulated KZN for being champions of 2016.

Buhle Mnguni from Pietermaritzburg Girls High School, who represented the Under 18 female basketball team said she was pleased with their performance after they won gold. She expressed the importance of the tournament to young players especially girls.

“This tournament gives us an opportunity to interact with players from other provinces. It makes us love sport even more,” she said.

KZN won by 79 points after getting 17 gold medals, eight silvers and 12 bronze. They were followed by Mpumalanga with 59 points.
