DUNDEE JULY 2016 COUNT DOWN BEGINS

It is that time of the year!   The countdown to the Dundee July 2016 has begun.

The Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR), the organisers of the Dundee July rural horse riding extravaganza, is proud to announce that the date for this year’s event has been confirmed for Saturday the 16th of July. This will be the 11th occurrence of this unique event of glee and glitz.

The Dundee July is one of the biggest occasions in the small northern town of Dundee famous for its large concentration of battlefields historical sites.  The event brings with it an influx of people from all over the country, with major economic spin offs for the entire region.

What makes the 2016 event more keenly awaited is the fact that last year’s race was unfortunately called-off on the day because of inclement weather conditions that rendered the track unsafe for horse racing.  The entertainment part continued albeit on a much reduced proportion.

A more extravagant street carnival through the town’s main street will officially kindle the festivities of the weekend at midday on Friday 15th July.  It will feature horse riders, multi-cultural dancers, vintage cars, famous VW Citi Golf club, bikers and many more.  The occasion also brings famous radio, TV and showbiz personalities to town.

The organising committee led by Mike Mthembu, Senior Manager for Recreation at DSR says planning for the event is at an advanced stage with the entertainment and security of the spectators and visitors as the utmost priority.

“Just to demonstrate how much we care for the safety and security of our citizens, our Department has fenced off the entire horse racing field by a modern so called see through fence, with an investment of R6 million. This will ensure that all people attending the event are screened and searched. Our partners, Endumeni Municipality and Umzinyathi District Municipality have also made contributions in improving the infrastructure. We urge all attending to co-operate with our security personnel and the police throughout the event,” commented Mthembu.

The main feature of the day is the traditional horse contest comprising of seven races on the race card.  Adding to the fun has been the introduction of betting of late.  However, the horses and betting is not the only reason people flock to the Dundee July year after year. It is also entertainment in the form of musical performances by top stars and local artists as well as fashion shows starring local and established designers.  The line-up of key artists and DJs is expected to draw crowds and will include traditional flavour, Hip hop, kwaito, rock & role and will continue till the break of down on the 17th July 2016.

The fashion theme for the Dundee July Rural Horse Race 2016 is KINGDOM BICENTENARY.  The KZN Fashion Council which organises and sponsors the fashion element has coined the theme to mark the celebration of 200 years since the consolidation of the Zulu Nation by King Shaka.

Yet again limited spaces are available on a first come first served basis for setting up private and commercial marquees. For details please Contact Sandile Mbonane by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
