The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation in partnership with KZN Department of Education hosted the 2020 KZN Provincial Secondary Schools Athletics Championship, at Kings Park Athletics Stadium in Durban on 06 to 08 March 2020 where more than 1400 athletes from the Province’s 12 education districts participated.

Underdogs Team Amajuba District were overall winners as they managed to bag a greater number of medals, outsprinting hosts and favourites Umlazi District who were favourites. The event was a great success as the selectors managed to select a large number of very hard working and talented young athletes from around the Province.

The selected team which is made up of 120 young athletes will be representing KZN at the 2020 National Secondary Schools Athletics Championship which is set to take place at Paarl in the Western Cape, from the 24th till 28 March 2020. The team will go to Paarl with a goal of bouncing back and perform much better than the previous years.

Education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu who attended the closing ceremony applauded organisers for organising a professional event that allowed learners to showcase their talents and committing themselves in sport. “I’m very happy to see young kids deciding to take part in sport activities, other than getting themselves involved in drugs and other bad activities. The level of competitiveness and the quality of athletes taking part in this event has really gone up. We as the Department of Education and Department of Sport and Recreation will work together to improved sport facilities in schools that are in rural areas. This will help us to easily identify talented learners even in rural areas,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Province is gearing up to host the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships at Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg no 20-21 March. The event will see athletes from the country’s nine provinces compete in different athletics track and field events.
