Boxing legend Elijah “Tap Tap” Makhathini has called on stakeholders involved in boxing development, including government, to work harder to assist boxers in the Province to get more fights so that they are able to make a living from the sport.

Makhathini hosted the Tap Tap Boxing Tournament in Eshowe on Sunday, 16 February. In the main fight KZN's Joshua Pretorious beat Malawi's Limbani Lano on a unanimous
points decision over eight rounds.

Makhathini was one of the most recognisable names in the sport of boxing in the 70s and the 80s because of a number of achievements in the national and in international arena. He is the former undisputed national middleweight champion.

He has been recognised on a number of times with accolades including the KZN Sport Awards.

The tournament afforded local and other boxers an opportunity to improve their ratings.

The event was also attended by the CEO of Boxing South Africa Tsholofelo Lejaka. With that event now behind us focus now shifts to Dundee on Saturday, 28 February when Starline Boxing Promotions led by Zandile Malinga present the Dundee on Fire boxing tournament.

This yet another department-funded event will feature a number of amateur and professional bouts. Another major attraction for this one will be the public weighing-in of boxer which is scheduled to take place at the town’s taxi rang. This will be first of its kind.

The venue for the Dundee tournament will be the Dundee TVET College from 14h00.
