The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation on Sunday, 02/02/2020, hosted the closing ceremony for the Club Pilot Training Project at Royal Hotel in Durban where about 350 representatives from clubs received their grading certificates.

The Project is an essential part of the Mass Participation Programme, which is aimed at increasing participation in sport and recreation at local levels, at the simplest level of organisation, the club. The Project was introduced in December 2016 with the purpose of creating an integrated and sustainable mechanism for the development of clubs on the basis of common and acceptable minimum standards.

The National Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA) introduced the Club Development Pilot Project in December 2016 with the purpose of creating an integrated and sustainable mechanism for the development of clubs based on common and acceptable minimum standards.

One of the beneficiaries of the Programme Mary-Jane Sokhela, who owns Durban Ladies Football Club applauded this programme as she had learnt a lot about club administration. She said the information she gained from the programme has changed the way she managed her club’s administration and the way to attract sponsors.

"Ever since I joined this programme I have gained better information and knowledge of running a club and I’m proud to say due to the skills I’ve learned I have managed to get a R200 000 sponsor from the National Lottery. And I urge the clubs who got the opportunity to be part of the programme to share the information and knowledge with other small club in order to grow sport.” she said.

Learnings from the pilot project will assist in formulation of effective programmes that would help to enhance the development of clubs.

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Hlengiwe Mavimbela said the Department regarded the development of clubs as an important ingredient in sport development.
She said clubs will form an integral part of the Department’s Ward Intervention programme which aims to deliver services at in wards to ensure that they reach beneficiaries at grassroots level.
