The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation recently hosted a successful 8th annual National Youth Camp, to empower youth with essential life skills that will enable them to become better citizens.

A total of 250 young people from different parts of KwaZulu-Natal were chosen to participate in the camp at uMlalazi Nature Reserve, at Mthunzini on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast from 30 November to 07 December 2019. The National Youth Camp took place simultaneously in all nine provinces.

One of the participants, Jodie-Ray Motalas (17) from Empangeni who was later elected to be President of the Trailblazers Movement said he had benefited immensely from all educational and recreational programmes offered by the camp.

Motalas also reflected on his amazing overall experience and what he had gained from the 2019 National Youth Camp.

"When I first got here I was really scared and most of us were scared, but along way we made good friends and we learned lessons such as nation building. Before we got here I wouldn’t have appreciated the opportunity, it is an honour for us to be here and I really appreciate being around different races. I’m really appreciative to the camp master, camp facilitators and everyone who was in the camp,’’ he said.

Another trailblazer, Ms Luyanda Nyawo (16) from uGu District said she will use what she learnt from the camp for her own benefit and her community.

“The camp taught me a lot of things, one of them was being able to accommodate and accept different cultures and races. What I saw in this camp is that we were united despite our different backgrounds and culture, we were just one big family. The other thing that I really loved from the camp was when we went for a community outreach, where we went to clean and re-paint the community hall and clinic. The experience was a great one and I can’t wait to tell my parents and friends back at home about it,’’ she said.
