MEC Sithole-Moloi applauds SALGA KZN-DSR Games for exposing talent

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi has applauded the successful hosting of the SALGA KZN-DSR Games in Umgungundlovu District where approximately 4000 youth from throughout KwaZulu-Natal showcased their talent in 16 different sport codes.

The games were played in different venues around Umgungundlovu from 06-09 December 2018, and involves athletes from the Province’s 11 Districts, including eThekwini Metro, in a highly competitive matches. They are hosted as part of a partnership between the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, South African Local Government Association KwaZulu-Natal as well as sport federations.

EThekwini once again emerged overall winners, followed by Amajuba in second, Harry Gwala District took third spot and hosts uMgungundlovu came fourth.

MEC Sithole-Moloi said the games give the Province’s youth an opportunity to participate in in sport and to expose their talent.

“The SALGA KZN-DSR Games are an important platform for mass participation of young people in sports, as we know that eliminations start at local municipal level, to district games and ultimately the provincial competition where all 11 districts bring their best talent to compete in different sports codes. These Games remain a solid foundation for talent identification and exposure,” she said.

“For us these games are much more than just getting our young people to participate in competitive sport. But they are also a significant platform to emphasise the message of living active lifestyles for young and old, as well as in the achievement of social cohesion as people get to know each other better.  Playing sport and participating in recreation activities also help in fighting social ills like drugs and alcohol abuse by keeping our youth occupied and contribute in improving the economic status of young people who are able to develop their talent further.”

MEC Sithole-Moloi congratulated the winners, eThekwini and all participants for their involvement in this programme.  There were vast economic benefits Umgungundlovu business, especially the hospitality industry.
