As part of the KwaZulu-Natal’s Schools Functionality Monitoring Programme, Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi together with Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature (MPLs) this week visited several schools in the King Cetshwayo District to assess their state of readiness for the beginning of the 2017 academic year.

The school visits scheduled to run between the first day of schooling on Wednesday 11th January and Friday the 13th are done together with the Provincial Department of Education as part of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature's oversight exercise over the executive arm of government.

First stop for the MEC’s entourage, which included members of the Education Portfolio Committee, was Mgezeni High School in Ntambanana near Empangeni, north coast of KZN.

The school, whilst situated in deep rural KZN, is one of the best schools in the Province both in terms of its new state-of-the-art infrastructure and sports facilities as well as academic performance. They attained a 91% matric pass rate in last year’s exams, which while still good represented 4% drop from the previous year.

Mrs Sithole-Moloi and the MPLs had an opportunity to engage members of the community including the Principal Mr Thami Mchunu and his Management team in a briefing on matters affecting the school in order to learn from their experiences and to best improve teaching and learning in the school.

The school recently moved to its new modern buildings which boast an elaborate computer centre, home economics kitchen, science laboratories, a well-equipped motor mechanic workshop as well as excellent sporting facilities.

MEC Sithole-Moloi and the delegation said they were inspired by the school’s good functionality.

“Mgezeni shows what can be achieved if people work as a team, have clear objectives and a plan,” she said.

Mgezeni High School is very sports inclined. The principal Mr Mchunu is the chairperson of the KZN Sports Confederation, an umbrella body for all sports associations in the Province. The famous Sangweni brothers, Siyabonga, former Orlando Pirates captain and Thamsanqa, a former Chippa United striker come from the school.

MPLs on day one also visited Empangeni Special School, a facility for the intellectually impaired learners situated just outside the town’s CBD.
