KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, joins millions of South Africans and the international rugby family in mourning the death of Springbok legend Joost van der Westhuizen.

His passing away has robbed us of one of South Africa's greatest ambassadors on and off the rugby field. The mention of his name ignites very fond memories of his heroic performances as part of the national rugby team, the Springboks. One of the most memorable moments was his contribution to nation building and social cohesion as part of the 1995 Springbok team that lifted the Rugby World Cup in front of our icon, the late President Nelson Mandela.

Closer to home in KZN he will always be remembered for his gallant performance during the test match against the All Blacks at King's Park Stadium in Durban, when he inspired one of the greatest comebacks in rugby history when the Springboks were trailing 22-6 with 15 minutes to go.

“South Africa has lost a hero, a true legend and leader who showed great character and fighting spirit during his playing days and in the past years of his battle against the illness. Coincidentally he died during February which we have declared the month of legends in our Province,” said MEC Sithole-Moloi.

“On behalf of the Provincial Government and the people of KwaZulu-Natal we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the rugby fraternity. May his soul rest in peace,” she said.
