Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu has urged parents to encourage their children to get involved in sports and arts in order showcase their talent and avoid social ills.

She was speaking at the eDumbe Culture and Sport Festival held on Saturday, 04/02/17, in Paulpetersburg, northern KZN, which was attended by hundreds of people. Simelane-Zulu was representing MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi.

The event started with a 2.5km walk led by Simelane-Zulu and Head of the Department of Sport and Recreation Rohini Naidoo as well as local leadership - which was followed by an aerobics session.

Simelane-Zulu said the Departments of Sport and Recreation and Arts and Culture are playing an important role in fostering social cohesion, unity and fighting social ills.

“I want to urge parents to their encourage children to play the different codes of sport. When young people are active they will not have time to get involved in bad things like excessive drinking of alcohol and unsafe sex. We also know that there are many young people who have talent in arts and culture and we want to encourage them to get involved in music, cultural activities and craft making,” she said.

The two Departments handed over music equipment and sports gear for local youth.
