MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi and her Education counterpart Mthandeni Dlungwana signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in Durban today, 07/04/17, committing their Departments to work together in the delivery of sports and arts programmes at all schools in the Province.

Speaking at the media conference MEC Sithole-Moloi said a healthy mind functions optimally in a healthy body, highlighting the importance of encouraging active lifestyles for learners. “Today marks a very historic day as my departments have signed the MOA with the Department of Education to integrate arts, culture, sport and recreation into the school curriculum. We pledge to work together in ensuring sport, arts and culture is understood in a broader spectrum as not just a hobby but a tool that can be natured into careers,” she said.

The visibly delighted Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana, committed himself to making sure that his department works well with Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation. “We know for a fact that sport plays a major role in developing the minds of our learners. It is against this reason that we want our learners to fully participate in various sporting activities in schools,” said MEC Dlungwana. The Department of Education will then ensure that all schools adhere to the MOA. To this effect, MEC Dlungwana said his Department will soon issue a circular directing all the districts to ensure that schools fully participate in sport and arts, including adherence to the two hours per week set aside for physical education and sports.

The MOA is part of interventions by the MECs to streamline the delivery of sports and arts programmes and to set clearly defined roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders.
