Entries for the 2017 Nelson Mandela Marathon have been opened and athletes are urged to register early ahead of the July deadline. The Marathon will be run on Sunday, 27 August from Imbali in Pietermaritzburg to the Mandela Capture Site in Howick. It comprises of the 42km, 21km, 10km and 5km races - starting from 05h30. The main race will be preceded by other activities on Saturday, 26 May, including a triathlon and a children’s race.

The Marathon traces the late President Mandela's last journey as a free man before his incarceration by the apartheid regime. He addressed the last meeting at Imbali and was arrested later in Howick.

At the race launch, held at the Capture Site on Thursday, 11 May 2017, it was announced that the number of entries will be capped at 15 000 participants in order to ensure the smooth running and to avoid hiccups identified in the previous years.

The race was officially launched by MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, her counterpart at Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube as well as Mayors of UMgungundlovu District, Thobekile Maphumulo and Umngeni Municipality's Sizwe Sokhela. Also present were representative of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and athletes.

The prize money for the main race, the 42km, will remain R100 000 for winners in both male and female categories. Second place gets R50 000 and the third finisher walks away with R25 000. There will be other incentives for breaking the race record.
