MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation in KwaZulu-Natal Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi led the Province as it marked National Recreation Day with the rest of country on Friday, 06 October.

The annual campaign aims to encourage all citizens to engage in active and healthy lifestyles.

The KZN event took place at Endishini Sport Grounds in Imbali in Pietermaritzburg and was attended by thousands of people, both young and old.

MEC Sithole-Moloi urged everyone to make healthy lifestyle choices. She re-iterated that living an active and healthy lifestyle helps in reducing lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes and hypertension.

“The National Recreation Day initiative is a call on all citizens to participate in programmes and choose to be active. We are happy that this has been achieved today and we encourage you to continue exercising as part of your lifestyle going forward,” she said. “Recreation Day is not only about exercising but also to eat healthy. We therefore encourage all of you to ensure that what you consume is not harmful to your body but makes it healthy and stronger."

The main activity of the day was a 4km walk through the streets of the township. The participants also took part in mass aerobics. They were also treated to a surprise appearance by actor from the popular television drama Isibaya, Andile Mxakaza, popularly known as “Fezile”. Mxakaza, who is also a fitness ambassador, led aerobics session, with another fitness fanatic Yolanda Sokhela who is an ambassador for a popular sports brand (Adidas).
