MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, has encouraged sport federations in KwaZulu-Natal to work closer with her department in order strengthen programmes for the development of talented athletes in the Province.

MEC Sithole-Moloi says her vision is to see more talent from grassroots level being exposed and developed to the highest level to ensure that KwaZulu-Natal supplies the largest pool of talent for provincial and national teams.

“Our Vision as the Department of Sport and Recreation is to be ‘an active and winning province’ and in order to achieve this it is important to work together with all structures to ensure that talent at grassroots level is exposed. Our message to the Sport Federations is that they should work harder to expose, nurture and retain the talent in the Province so that our teams can have a pool of talented players who can compete with the best in the country and internationally,” she said.

MEC Sithole-Moloi held her first meeting with Sport Federations last week where she pledged to continue to strengthen the already solid relationships with the Federations, who are central to the delivery of the Department’s mandate of creating sporting opportunities for the youth.

“We are here to work as a team. We want federations to talk to us so that we can assist where necessary,” said MEC Sithole Moloi, adding that she would not be introducing any changes to the policies and mandate of the Department as they remain the same.

“The only change that could be expected is in relation to how we do things,” she said.

MEC Sithole-Moloi also revealed that she was no stranger to sport as she had played netball and athletics in her high school days.

“Growing up, I was a netball player and I was really good at it,” she said.

She emphasised the importance of participating in sport as it helps one to stay active, keep in shape and in good health. She added that children should be encouraged to play sport at school as it is where their passion is developed.
