The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation promotes the preservation of the indigenous games from the past played by different communities. This is done in partnership with the KZN Indigenous Games Council by reviving games including stick fighting, khokho, board games (umlabalaba) and others.

Popularising the sport has now reached a stage where the indigenous games form part of the school sport programme. Interestingly it is at community level across the Province that the games have grown more in popularity amongst the youth.

Every year at about this time district teams come together to compete at provincial level in the games. This is because the games to feed to the national games aligned with the Heritage Month activities in September.

The 2016 Games will be held at Ugu Sports Complex in Margate this weekend from 26-27 August.

The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi calls upon the communities, especially from Ugu and regions to come and witness the games as spectators so as to encourage the participants to give out their ultimate best. Entrance is free.

All 11 districts including EThekwini Municipality have formed their teams through local selections. EThekwini is always a team to watch and are revered by their peers.

The Games will be used to select the Provincial Team to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the National Games to be held in Polokwane later next month.
