Hlengiwe Mavimbela is our new MEC

The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation has a new political head following the appointment of Hlengiwe Mavimbela as the new MEC.

Mavimbela’s appointment was announced today, 27/05/2019, by Premier Sihle Zikalala after his inauguration ceremony held at Parkside residence in Pietermaritzburg. Zikalala and the 10 MEC were sworn in by KZN Judge President AchmatJappie.

Mavimbela replaces MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi who has been deployed to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In his address, Zikalala implored the new executive to hit the ground running and work hard to improve the lives of the people, especially the vulnerable.

The MECs are as follows:

  2. Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Hlengiwe Mavimbela
  3. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Leaders, Sipho Hlomuka
  4. Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube
  5. Education, Kwazi Mshengu
  6. Finance, Ravi Pillay
  7. Health, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu
  8. Public Works and Human Settlements, Peggy Nkonyeni
  9. Transport, Mxolisi Kaunda
  10. Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza

Vision of the MEC

The vision of the MEC is to restore KZN to its former glory as the number one province in spot and recreation. The MEC therefore commits to:

  • Acceleration of  the delivery of Sport and Recreation in the Province through mass participation of the citizens in KwaZulu-Natal;
  • Taking sport and recreation to the previously disadvantaged people, rural communities, disabled and women;
  • Improvement of the quality of sport and recreation through the development of all coaches, trainers, volunteers, administrators;
  • Achievement of  excellence in sport and recreation;
  • Provision of adequate sporting facilities to all communities;
  • Hosting and co-hosting of major National and International sporting events;
  • Promotion of sport and recreation agencies that contribute to the attainment of the overall vision of the Department.
