Ms Amanda Mapena,
MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture

DEPARTMENT WELCOMES MS AMANDA BANI-MAPENA AS THE NEW MEC

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture would like to congratulate and welcome Ms Amanda Mapena as the new MEC for the Department.

Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube announced new members of the Executive Council in Durban today, 11/08/22.

MEC Bani-Mapena is the former chairperson of the Sport and Recreation Portfolio Committee in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and is a dedicated political activist who is committed towards the development of KwaZulu-Natal. She is the youngest Member of Provincial Legislature for the ANC.

She holds a Bachelor of Technology in Accounting from her alma-mater, the Durban University of Technology, and an Honours degree in Leadership Development from the University of Stellenbosch Business School, majoring in negotiations. She’s currently obtaining her Master’s degree in Leadership.

Her activism spans a little over 20 years, having joined politics when she was 15 years old. Mapena, was inspired by her late brother Sicelo Bani, who was an activist from the late ’70s and showed great selflessness in the things that he did for the community with the limited resources he had. That, and the people around him who always spoke about a new South Africa.

An active and avid voice for the youth, Mapena understands that the world is getting younger, and the style of leadership is evolving to tackle the issues of young people, as well as the importance to grasp and find solutions to issues pertaining to youth. However, she remains a huge believer of inter-generational transition and the importance of institutional memory and wisdom of her predecessors.

Vision

A healthy, winning, and socially cohesive province through sport and recreation.
