It was a day full of action, demonstration of talent and sheer dedication to achieve against all odds, as disabled athletes competed in the 2019 Provincial Disability Games on Saturday, 09 November 2019.

The Games that were held at Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay, saw approximately 1100 participants, including aides, from KwaZulu-Natal’s 11 districts competing in eight sport codes.

At the end of the day, Umgungundlovu District emerged as overall winners after collecting a total of 15 overall points, followed by eThekwini in second spot (13 points) and Umkhanyakude taking the third position with 11 points.

Codes that were played are athletics, wheelchair basketball, chess, football, goalball, mlabalaba, netball, table tennis and passing the ball.

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation in KwaZulu-Natal, Hlengiwe Mavimbela was full of praise for the display of talent and dedication by the disabled athletes as they competed throughout the day. She reiterated the commitment by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation to continue working with the disability sector to ensure that opportunities to participate in sport are made available at all levels.

“Disabled members of the community are a very important sector of society and they must be given opportunities to participate in sport and recreation activities in communities where they live. These Games were a culmination of selections from Ward to local, district and provincial levels. We are committed to continue supporting this programme for the disability sector and to ensure that more disabled people are given opportunities to participate at Ward level,” she said.

“I was impressed with the talent that was displayed today and it showed that disabled people also deserve to be given opportunities in life,” said MEC Mavimbela.

The hosting of the Provincial Disability Games were a result of the resolutions of the Disability Summit hosted by the Department in November 2016, where the sector requested the Department to avail programmes that would ensure participation from Ward up to Provincial level.

The 2019 Games are the second edition of the provincial event involving all 11 districts of KZN. The Games were initiated in 2016 as a contest between Ilembe and King Cetshwayo Districts. In 2017, six districts participated and last year (2018) the event was extended to all districts. The Provincial event is a culmination of selection rounds and preparations at local and district levels.

The hosting of the games also coincide with the commemoration of International Disability Rights Awareness Month, on 3 November to 3 December.

The Provincial Disability Games are part of efforts by the Department of Sport and Recreation KZN to promote active lifestyle among citizens with disability by encouraging them to participate in sport and recreation activities.
