AmaZulu FC were crowned 2018 champions of the KZN Premier’s Cup football tournament that took place over the past weekend, 28/29 July in Durban.
The pre-season tournament, organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation, involved seven professional teams from the Province that are campaigning in the Premier Soccer League’s Premiership Division and the National First Division. The quarterfinals saw three matches being played at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Saturday and the semi-finals and finals took place at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Sunday. AmaZulu were favoured by the draw as they gained automatic qualification into the semi-finals.
In the first quarterfinal game, Real Kings beat Uthongathi FC 2-1; Richards Bay FC (formerly Thanda Royal Zulu) defeated defending champions Royal Eagles 4-2 on penalties, while in the all Premiership clash, Lomontville Golden Arrows eliminated Maritzburg United 1-0.
In the semi-finals on Sunday, AmaZulu beat Kings 4-2 on penalties, and Richards Bay eliminated Arrows 4-3 after another penalty shootout.
Acting Head of Department, Ntokozo Chonco applauded all participating teams and fans alike for their dedication to the success of the event.
“These games have a great impact in ensuring that the teams are ready to play at the highest level. The Premier’s Cup sets a good platform for players to prepare for the upcoming season. The Department will continue to work closely with teams in order to continue to expose talent.”
“There is no doubt that Richards Bay FC will be a force to be reckoned with in the National First Division in the new season. We are happy that we have seen a lot of progress in football in our Province,” said Chonco.
