Dundee July stake money reaches R1 million mark

The stakes are high for this year’s popular Dundee July, with the stake money reaching over R1 million. At the media launch on Tuesday, July 10, the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi announced stake money of R950 000 for winning jockeys and racehorse owners. A little later the Endumeni Local Municipality Mayor, Siboniso Mbatha and his Umzinyathi District counterpart, Mthandeni Ngubane, added a further R100 000 pushing the total stake to R1 050 million. Horse-racing, trade fair, fashion and food at the Dundee July

The Northern KwaZulu-Natal town of Dundee will resound with hooves pounding the racetrack and the frenzied shouts of excited crowds as horses and jockeys race to the finish line when the annual rural race meeting comes to town. KZN Cabinet applauds Comrades Marathon winners

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Willies Mchunu, and members of the Provincial Executive Council (Cabinet) have applauded the effort and determination of two KwaZulu-Natal athletes who finished tops in this year’s Comrades Marathon. MEC Sithole-Moloi tables 2018/2019 KZN Sport and Recreation budget vote

The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi has today, 04/05/18, tabled the R451.953 million budget for the Department of Sport and Recreation for 2018/2019 at the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature in Pietermaritzburg. The main focus of the budget will be on provision of sport infrastructure for disadvantaged communities, especially in rural areas, promotion of active and healthy lifestyles, high performance sport and greater support for the development of different sport codes. MEC express condolences following the death of football coach Bheka Phakathi

The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi has today, 30/04/18, visited the family of the late football coach Bheka Phakathi to offer her condolences. The former Orlando Pirates, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United player passed away following a fatal car accident in Greytown, KZN midlands, on Sunday.  Speaking to the family at their Lamontville home, the MEC said she was still shocked about the untimely death of the Umvoti FC coach. Mosiako and Mbhele win Nquthu race

Top short distance runners Thabang Mosiako and Janet Mbhele won the male and female categories of the 2nd Annual Nquthu 10km Race and Fun Run at Nquthu Stadium in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, 08/04/18, respectively. The duo each walked away with R10 000 first prize money. The race also incorporated a 5km Fun Run, which attracted many young people from the area and district. Rural Sport Programme unearth talent for rural youth


MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi says the hosting of the Provincial Rural Sport Tournament featuring the Province’s traditional councils will help in unearthing talent in rural areas. The tournament was held at Kandahar Sport Grounds and Ladysmith High School in the Alfred Duma Local Municipality on Saturday and Sunday, 24-25 March. Mnqobokazi Traditional Council from Umkhanyakude District was crowned overall winners, followed by Maphumulo TC from eThekwini Metro and KwaXolo TC from Ugu District took third spot. Rural youth to compete in Rural Sport Development Programme

As part of efforts to promote sports in rural areas, the Department of Sport and Recreation will this weekend host the Provincial Rural Sport Development Programme, which features youth from various traditional councils in the Province. Department hosts successful Provincial Schools Athletics championships

Young athletes from the Province showcased their talent on the track when KwaZulu-Natal hosted the primary and secondary schools Provincial Track and Field Championships over the past two weekends. MEC hands over R13m sport facility for rural South Coast village

The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi handed over a newly built state of the art sports stadium to the community of Gcilima, near Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast on Friday, 23 February. The construction of Jabavu Sportsfield, formerly known as Thokothe Grounds, was funded by the Provincial Department of Sport and Recreation at a cost of over R13million. Read more...

  
Waterval inmates crowned Inter-Management Games champions

As part of its contribution towards the rehabilitation of offenders in the Province, the Department of Sport and Recreation is collaborating with Correctional Services to deliver competitive sport programmes for inmates. On Tuesday, 20 February, the Department’s Umzinyathi District together with our sister department, Arts and Culture (Northern Region) assisted in hosting the 2018 Northern KZN Inter-Management sport and recreation event for offenders at the Waterval Correctional Centre sports grounds, in Newcastle, northern KZN. Inaugural Umtshezi/Wembezi race off to a good start

The inaugural Umtshezi/Wembezi 10km Challenge, which was staged in honour of KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu in Estcourt, attracted a strong field of top class athletes in both male and female categories. The race was held between Estcourt and Wembezi on Saturday, 17 February. Thobani Chagwe won the men's race while Janet Mbhele won the female category. Department takes Water Safety Campaign to schools

The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) continues with its endeavors to ensure water safety and curb drownings with the Water and Safety Campaign being rolled-out to schools in the Province. The Department’s officials visited two schools under Umgungundlovu District, namely Esigodini Primary School in Pietermaritzburg and Mbuthisweni Primary School in Richmond this month (January). EADP paddlers rack up Drak Challenge titles


The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation backed Elite Athlete Development Programme, produced stellar results at the first major river canoe marathon of 2018 when their athletes, Andy Birkett and Jenna Ward, won their respective titles at the N3TC Drak Challenge recently.
