KZN Premier’s cup draw produces mouthwatering clashes

The much anticipated pre-season tournament will be played at two venues, the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Saturday (27/07) and the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Sunday (28/07).  The draw for the event, which features KZN’s three  Premier Soccer League and four National First Division teams, was held at Moses Mabhida Stadium today (11/07/19). Dundee July to go ahead as planned

FOLLOWING a very fruitful meeting between the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation, Umzinyathi District Municipality, Endumeni Local Municipality and representatives of uMzinyathi Business Forum, the  Department is happy to announce that the 14th edition of the upcoming Dundee July will go ahead as a planned next month. The meeting was as a result of an intervention by MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Hlengiwe Mavimbela in order to find a lasting solution to the concerns raised by the local business forum. Sport MEC gets to taste the ‘most beautiful road race’

Newly appointed MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Hlengiwe Mavimbela joined 15 000 ladies from all walks of life who took part in the Durban Spar Women’s Race popularly known to be “Durban’s Most Beautiful Road Race”, on Sunday. Mavimbela participated in the 5km fun walk which started and finished at Kings Park Rugby Stadium outer fields on Sunday 23, June. Youth month means Comrades and the KZNA / DSR Youth Run

June is youth month, so it is entirely fitting that South Africa’s future athletic stars should provide the curtain raiser for the country’s biggest road race by taking part in the KZNA / DSR Youth Run on Saturday, June 8. Organised by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation and KZN Athletics, this annual mass participation event attracts thousands of budding athletes and gives them a taste of the benefits of exercise as they experience the simple joy of running. Hlengiwe Mavimbela is our new MEC

The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation has a new political head following the appointment of Hlengiwe Mavimbela as the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation. Mavimbela’s appointment was announced on Monday, 27/05/2019, by Premier Sihle Zikalala after his inauguration ceremony in Pietermaritzburg. Zikalala and the 10 MECs were sworn in by KZN Judge President Achmat Jappie. Mavimbela replaces MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi who has been deployed to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Read more...

Millions distributed to Arts & Culture organisations and Sport Federations

The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, has announced funding of approximately R45millions to arts and sports non-profit organisations to implement development programmes in the sectors. Mnqobokazi Traditional Council are rural sport champs

Mnqobokazi Traditional Council from Umkhanyakude District have been crowned overall champions of the Rural Sport Development Programme Tournament held at Thokothe Sports Grounds, at Gcilima in Margate, KZN south coast yesterday, Saturday, 23 February 2019. The tournament featured youth from five traditional councils, Maphumulo Traditional Council (TC) in eThekwini, Mnqobokazi TC in Umkhanyakude District, KwaXolo TC in Ugu, Vulindlela TC in Umzinyathi and Amaswazi TC in Uthukela. Dusi in the sights for EADP paddlers


Paddlers on the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation (KZNDSR) supported Elite Athlete Development Programme (EADP) are targeting top finishes in the country’s premier canoe race, the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon later this month. The FNB Dusi takes place over three days from 14 to 16 February and is a race that includes a number of portage sections where paddlers must run with their boats which adds to the demands of the 120km journey from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. President Ramaphosa to participate in health walk and stadium handover in PMB

President Cyril Ramaphosa will join the early morning 5km walk to promote active and healthy lifestyles in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday, 10 January 2019. The walk will start at Freedom Square in the Pietermaritzburg CBD at 06h00 and end at the new Msunduzi Athletics Track. MEC Sithole-Moloi applauds SALGA KZN-DSR Games for exposing talent

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi has applauded the successful hosting of the SALGA KZN-DSR Games in Umgungundlovu District where approximately 4000 youth from throughout KwaZulu-Natal showcased their talent in 16 different sport codes. The games were played in different venues around Umgungundlovu from 06-09 December 2018, and involved athletes from the Province’s 11 Districts, including eThekwini Metro, in a highly competitive matches. Exciting Harry Gwala Summer Cup Rural Horse Riding event bring economic spin-offs for locals

With the dust barely settled following an exciting Harry Gwala Summer Cup Rural Horse Riding yesterday, enthusiasm is already building up towards the staging of the 10th anniversary of the rural horse riding event next year. Thousands of horse racing enthusiasts braved the chilly and misty weather at Kilmun village, near Underberg in the KZN midlands on Saturday, 18/11/18, to witness eight highly competitive races that saw jockeys and their horses compete for the total stake of R140 000, which has grown from last year’s R80 000 prize money. Provincial Disability Games return to Ilembe District

KwaDukuza is gearing up to host the Provincial Disability Games at Stanger High School in Ilembe District on Saturday, 10 November 2018. The Games are part of a comprehensive response to issues raised by disabled people during the KZN Disability Summit which was hosted by the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi in November 2016. The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongi Sithole-Moloi is saddened by the passing away of Royal Eagles coach, Roger Sikhakhane on Saturday, 03/11/18. “We have learnt with shock of the death of Coach Roger Sikhakhane this morning. We were aware that he has not been well for some time. But we were hoping that he would recover and continue with his good work of leading one of our National First Division teams Royal Eagles FC to promotion at the end of the season,” said MEC Sithole-Moloi. The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation is encouraging active and healthy lifestyles in KwaZulu-Natal this weekend. Join us for the celebration of National Recreation Day on Friday, 5th October at Mehlokazulu High School, Imbali, Pietermaritzburg at 8am. Activities include 5km fun walk, aerobics and others.  
At 8am on Sunday, 7th October, Pietermaritzburg’s new Msunduzi Athletics Stadium will host the National Big Walk comprising 5km and 10km walks and loads of fun activities. MEC applauds triumphant KZN IGs team

Team KZN are the undisputed champions of the indigenous games following yet another successful defence of the National Indigenous Games Festival crown. The KwaZulu-Natal team defended the championship title for the 8th consecutive during the week-long games that were held at Seshego stadium in Polokwane on 24 - 28 September. The KZN teams excelled in the majority of the games codes that they participated in such as ncuva, khokho, umlabalaba, amagende, drie-stokkies and juskei. Read more...

The Province’s senior citizens braved the scorching Richards Bay weather on Wednesday, 12/09/18, to display their sporting talents during KZN Indigenous Games held at Umhlathuze Sports Complex. Usuthu win 2018 KZN Premier’s Cup

Amazulu FC were crowned 2018 champions of the KZN Premier’s Cup football tournament that took place over the past weekend, 28/29 July in Durban. The pre-season tournament, organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation, involved seven professional teams from the Province that are campaigning in the Premier Soccer League’s Premiership Division and the National First Division.
